Upfront Warning To Prevent You From Wasting Your Time
This pedal/e-motor hybrid vehicle was originally designed to operate within a bicycle lane or on the side of a road like a bicycle. Since then many jurisdictions have regulated e-bikes and variants by limiting their motor power (watts). The motor used in this vehicle is rated at 2000W. That is the minimum required for the weight and carrying capability of this vehicle. As a result, this vehicle may not be legal in your area unless it is licensed and/or insured. Investigate the regulations and decide for yourself whether to proceed or not.

3 facts drive our mission:
1. ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles that burn fossil fuels are a major and increasing threat to health and our planet.
2. Bicycles are a common mode of "neighborhood" or shorter distance transportation worldwide. Their infrastructure such as bike paths, bike lanes and shops for sales, servicing and parts is well-established and growing. Likewise, electric bicycles (E-bikes) are a proven, common and growing technology.
3. The vast majority of the earth’s humans in warmer climates cannot afford currently manufactured multi-passenger electric vehicles which have a price range of $10,000 to $120,000+ $USD .
So what can they do to help repair our planet, provide themselves with a better life through affordable transportation (and, as a side effect, retain or improve their health through exercise) in a way that is even remotely affordable to them?
We help by providing free, web-accessible, tested!!, do-it-yourself (DIY) e-vehicle designs and detailed guidance to help people build basic electric/pedal vehicles. These minimalist hybrid vehicles fit into the NEV (Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle) classification. They are made with recycled bicycle parts, (biodegradable) plywood, and rechargeable battery-powered motors for a simpler, more affordable, maintainable, and "greener" vehicle that does not emit greenhouse gases. They also promote healthier humans through exercise when desired or required.
Our tested, free 2D and 3D designs and detailed on-line guidance help do-it-yourselfers build/maintain/manufacture these greener, inexpensive (~$1300CDN or ~$1000USD in 2023) and healthy vehicles.
We are an incorporated, not-for-profit, but self-supporting venture. Our motivation can be summarized by Greta's famous statement:
"The biggest threat to the earth is thinking someone else will save it."
Let’s help save our planet for our kids, grandkids and their kids – it’s the only one we have!
To give you a concept of the type of vehicle specified on this website , the photos below are of our latest version (V4) of the Scottmobile.
Without solar panel roof.
With optional roof made using flexible solar panel(s).
It was built and tested in 2023 as a "young family" vehicle and can be used as a minimalist SUV or truck. It fits into the Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) US classification or the L6eQuadricycle EU classification.
Some of its features:
- A range between X and Y KMs. The range, of course, depends on many variables (see the Motor section and Battery section for more detail). This range was with a load of 1 person (the driver) on fairly flat asphalt with start pedalling (pedalling from dead stop only).
- 2-person adjustable seating with expandable seating for 2 or more kids, pets, cargo... in truck bed
- shock-absorbing, high ground clearance (43cm/17") suspension using 66cm/26" wheels for rough roads
- roll bar, seat belts, rear reflectors for safety
- optional turn signals, stop light
- small valuables "frunk" (front trunk) and electrical gear cowl that locks
- overall: length 318cm/125" , height 114cm/44", width 101cm/40" (fits in a bike lane or on a sidewalk.)
- a 48V Li-ion battery for safety (voltage below 50V is considered relatively safe for humans) and endurance (300-500+ cycles)
- Optional solar panel roof that can be used as a vehicle battery charger as well as general home battery charger for any device that uses 48v to 12v power input for charging. For devices lower than 12V, an automobile 12V to 120/220V AC converter can then be used to charge phones, laptops using the device's charger.
- optional side curtains and windshield to help repel the rain
Notice that this vehicle was not made with the latest (but less common, more expensive) bicycle parts such as disk brakes or indexed thumb shifters. Again, this design is purposely as cheap and simple as feasible using the most common parts available. If you have the experience to add newer parts, please proceed and, if successful, add your specification, experience to the discussion forum .
You may have noticed that the result with options (pic below) is reminiscent of a Model T Ford pickup truck! The vehicle's name might have been "Model T V2.0" and might be considered the electric, greener equivalent of Henry's creation.
As you may have noticed by now, our website resembles a textbook. We do not apologize for this as we are presenting a comprehensive online manual of instructions on how to execute a detailed process to accomplish a valuable outcome - from locally available resources. This is not a kit car and we do not sell parts. That would not only add prohibitive costs for shipping, but also indirectly add to our CO2 emissions footprint. But what that constraint requires is that we provide you with comprehensive, detailed instructions. A successful result cannot be accomplished without attention to detail. We hope you will agree that this approach to a comprehensive DIY guide will save you money, reduce your risk, and raise the probability of your success.
If you have read this far, you may be asking the question, "Can I build this vehicle?" That is a critical question to ask at this point. Here are some questions to ask yourself in order to help evaluate your readiness:
Again, please note that we are not trying to sell you anything. We are trying to present this project in as objective, fact-based way that we can without any marketing hype so you can make a rational decision whether to proceed or not.
First, the Musts* (a Must decision criteria is easily evaluated - either Yes or No. If a No, then it is advised to NOT proceed until that Must (regulation, capability or skill) has been dealt with, acquired or learned.)
1. This vehicle requires an e-motor with minimum 2000 watts power output. You need to investigate what the regulations regarding "small vehicle" (small e-vehicle, e-bike and moped) motor power constraints are in your jurisdiction. In Canada, to be considered an e-bike (no license, registration or insurance needed), it must have operational pedals and the motor cannot be rated higher than 750W :
"Electric bicycles are considered "low-speed electric bicycle" if it has a motor of a maximum of 750 watts (1 horsepower) and a top speed of 45 kph (28 mph) on a flat surface. These types of electric bicycles are considered equivalent to regular bicycles, so they do not require a license, registration, or insurance. Mar 28, 2023"
The lowest maximum rating I have read about for this class is 250W so be warned. If you want to comply, then this decision criteria becomes a Must and this regulation may be a show-stopper depending on which of the 3 costs: license, registration, insurance is/are mandatory in your area. Investigate and adjust the estimate to include these costs. Also be warned that if this vehicle cannot be classified as a "small vehicle" it may require a safety inspection that full-size cars are subject to during the licensing process. And that can result in the addition of safety options beyond the base configuration.
In summary, the more you wish to use this vehicle in cities versus rural areas, the more that detailed bylaws exist, the more strict and enforced the bylaws, the more you need to consider this constraint.
Given this variability, these costs are NOT included in the base estimate found
2. Do I have access to an internet-connected device such as cell phone, tablet, laptop, desktop? Either of these devices is adequate to preview this website, but when you begin construction, we strongly advise a laptop or desktop with a 2-button mouse and scroll wheel in order to be able to better view detailed drawings of portions of the vehicle and read detailed instructions.
3. Internet access to the 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design/Drafting) software OnShape. To quickly check, click here.
This browser/cloud-based software is free for non-commercial purposes when users access public documents. When a document is Public (like the Scottmobile V4 document) this
"Makes the document accessible to all Onshape users. Users may not edit a public document, but may make a copy and edit that. "
Thus, if you wish to adapt or alter our design to fit your needs better, please do so! But please use OnShape and Scottmobile V4 as your base. Once your creation has been thoroughly tested, please contribute your design here.
OnShape, has tested their product and recommends 3 browsers:
Mozilla Firefox (I have used on Win 10, Linux Ubuntu (Linux much more efficient than Win10.) )
Google Chrome or
Safari (Mac OS only)
4. Are my basic computer user skills adequate? (There is no need to be a software developer, programmer, hardware builder, or CAD drafter.) Can I perform web searches using Google? On a website page, can I search within it, scroll down/up? In Onshape can I pan, rotate, zoom objects with a mouse? In the device operating system or, better yet, Google drive on-line applications such as Docs, Sheets, Keep, can I document, file, organize and retrieve information? Keep is a great way to take notes, keep task and shopping lists, etc, on your cell phone and it automatically synchronizes to your laptop version as do all Google apps.
5. Can I search for and use Youtubes? This is critical for educating yourself for this project as well as lifelong learning.
6, Am I handy enough to put together a piece of furniture from a kit such as an Ikea product given adequate instructions? By the way, I can guarantee our instructions are better than an Ikea set because, besides diagrams, they have English narrative that can be translated into 141 languages using Google Translate, As well, OnShape provides viewing of 3D models with details of the parts used to assist you.
7. Can I perform basic carpentry skills with confidence (power or hand tools used to measure, align, cut, drill, countersink, screw, plane, glue, clamp, bolt...)?
8. Can I perform basic metalworking skills with confidence (tools used to drill, cut, bend, hacksaw, bolt, screw, fasten...) ? Here is a more challenging example: You will need to bend (max) 1/4" thick mild steel that is 3" wide for 2 steering knuckles. This is done preferably by heating the metal with a torch, but can be done cold using a suitable vice and large hammer. An alternative to bending is to weld 3 pieces of this metal to form the knuckle specified here. You will need 2 of them.
9. Do I understand the fundamentals of electricity and can I wire a simple DC electric circuit with load and suitable fuse?
10. Do I understand how bicycles work and can I remove the parts from a bicycle and reuse them? Can I cut bicycle frame tubing with a hacksaw or angle grinder? Can I bend this tubing slightly using a vice and heavy hammer?
These are most of the skills you will need to perform this project. Don't be disappointed if you do not have some or even all of these competencies yet. Just get to work and acquire them. Acquire the tools (rent, borrow, buy), get some scrap material, examine the overview photos in the Instructions, view the referenced Youtubes and practice. When you can execute the skill in a quality, accurate manner, you can check that one off your list.
Some further considerations:
The internet-connected device above needs to be close to the work area for ease of reference. Of course, keep it in a cleaner, protected part of the work area.
Always use recommended safety equipment and procedures described by the tool manufacturer and best practices when working with wood or metal. An injury is never worth the time you tried to save.
Do I have access to the use of a welder or can I hire a welder if/when needed?
Can I hire an electrician if/when needed?
DWS: Can parts be placed in a kit and sold separately that eliminates this need? Provide for sale (low) or specify kit, copyright and offer for royalty (high) of a localized provider?
Can I follow written instructions patiently and without cutting corners?
Do I have patience when building something?
Do I have friends or others who can help?
And probably the most important trait of all:
Do I have perseverance/determination/"grit" when confronted with problems and do I usually overcome them in some way? Do I complete most projects that I start or do I give up easily? If you are of the latter, then, to be blunt, this project is not for you.
Please note that we are not trying to sell you anything or even encourage you to start if you are not ready! We are trying to increase your probability of success when building this e-vehicle by helping you make a decision at this point whether to proceed or not. From this perspective, we can provide some reassurance to you by relating how state-of-the-art our build process is and how you can access it using modern information technologies.
Because of the internet and cloud computing - and the applications that use these technologies - the probability of success of DIY projects has improved greatly in recent years. We want to help you with a successful build by using the many capabilities of the internet through this website (and many other linked websites and internet resources).
We use a combination of internet online applications so they are free to use and there is no need to update them to the latest features or worry about backup or security. Of course, you must agree to the terms regarding using your data that they offer you to use the app. This is a small price to pay for this elegant and simple solution for accessing and sharing information. Here is the list:
Google Sites, Groups (for the Forum), ....
OnShape 2D and 3D CAD (computer-aided design). The 2D drawing above and 3D drawing below are examples. OnShape is a SaaS (software as a service) on-line CAD tool that is NOT downloaded to your device. It runs on a secure cloud computer somewhere and users access it online through a modern web browser and ordinary mouse (2 buttons for L,R click and a scroll wheel). It is free to use provided the output (drawings, models...) are shared publicly. There are huge advantages of this SaaS/cloud architecture including real-time collaboration of, for example, a builder in India and a designer in Canada viewing/editing the same diagram of a part and making real-time changes to that diagram of that part as they discuss them. This is like 2 people next to each other discussing changes to the design of a part even though they are actually on different continents! This eliminates constantly emailing versions whenever changes are made to a design.
